New Memoir by Award-Winning Global Educator Shows the Power of Traveling in the Process of Becoming an Internationally Competent World Citizen

Global Safari by Zekeh Gbotokuma

Bookcover

Nationwide — Global Safari is a memoir-travelogue, offering an account of the author’s intercontinental travel experiences from his local village to the more global “village”, from Africa to Europe, the Americas, and Asia. This book is a story about courage, international friendship, hope, survival, procrastinated return and homecoming to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

In 1978, the author left his country for Rome, Italy. His safari or journey started as a three-year pilgrimage, so to speak, or religious education and spiritual pursuit at the world’s headquarters of Catholicism. As a seminarian, he studied theology at Pontifical Urban University de Propaganda Fide, about three blocks away from St Peter’s Square. He had the golden opportunity to serve as a Good Friday’s acolyte or Altar boy to His Holiness Pope John Paul II for whom he had a great admiration. But he exited the seminary because he was no longer interested in becoming a Roman Catholic priest.

So the short-lived spiritual journey to Rome ended up being a long and temporal Europe Tour. Taking advantage of the Old Continent’s international educational opportunities and student mobility, he frequently traveled to England, France, Liechtenstein, and Germany to study languages and cultures. His proficiency in German turned out to be a life-saving experience with a great economic benefit. It secured him a seven-summer employment in Germany as an international student worker (Werkstudent, in German). That’s how he was able to pay for his education after losing his generous scholarship from the Vatican.

The road to Rome also ended up becoming a Columbus-like rediscovery of the Americas, a pursuit of the American Dream through Nationalization, and a World Tour as the author took his safari to China and South Korea. The book shows the process of achieving international competency and ‘cosmocitizenship’, or global citizenship, through a “world-ready” education, working, networking, and immersion into world cultures and languages. Its distinguishing features include the willingness to tell real-life stories, share lived travel-based experiences, and draw lessons for personal, professional, and community benefit. Its effective use of wonderful photographs will also provoke in the reader a desire to discover some of the cultural heritage sites and wonders of the world. In a nutshell, Global Safari is the account of the quest and conquest of a new self through transits, transitions, and translations.

In celebration of the United Nations-designated World Tourism Day 2015 (September 27), Cambridge Scholar Publishing selected Global Safari among its “three best-selling titles on travel and travel writing.”

Bridging the World Language Divide: Morgan State University Philosopher Publishes New Groundbreaking Multilingual Glossary

Polygot Pocket Dictionary By Dr. Zekeh S. Gbotokuma

Book cover and author, Dr. Zekeh S. Gbotokuma

Nationwide — A Polyglot Pocket Dictionary of Lingála, English, French and Italian by Dr. Zekeh S. Gbotokuma is a glossary that allows readers to appreciate positive diversity and interculturalism through multilingualism. Building on, and referring to, the author’s experiences of studying and living in Africa, Europe, and the USA as a series of transits, transitions, and translations, it urges the readers to enhance their global competency and brain power.

It also challenges them to seek ‘Cosmocitizenship’ or global citizenship through a Babel-like experience, that is, the study of world languages and cultures. To this end, it shares enlightening reflections on the numerous benefits of multilingualism, and allows the readers to develop basic language skills in Lingála, English, French, and Italian. As such, in addition to the glossary, this work also contains key facts about the languages at hand, as well as useful phrases, weekdays, numbers, and elements of grammar.

In the Dictionary’s Preface, Dr. Eyamba G. Bokamba, a Professor of Linguistics, African Languages, French and Italian at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, praises the work as follows, “As any book author knows, production of a publication of this magnitude demands considerable time, planning and meticulous attention to details. Guided by his own experience, Dr. Gbotokuma has produced here an accessible and highly informative pocket dictionary that is thoughtfully structured to optimize the learner’s benefits. Unlike similar reference tools that are published under various topical titles (e. g., “compact”, and “concise” dictionary), the glossary in this one is preceded by a rich introduction, containing a summary of the language’s grammar, greetings (which are must and the starting point of any communication in Lingála and other African languages), and many other practical expressions, including forms of address, requests, days of the week, numbers, etc. As such, it can be used as a quick reference in a formal class or self-instruction on Lingála.”

He continues, “In fact, it fills a major gap in Lingála references tools for new teachers of Lingála who may not have access to any comparable or comprehensive bilingual dictionary combining it with any of the targeted three languages here. I wish I had this type of resource during my days as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at my alma mater, or when I assumed the directorship of the Program in African Languages at my present university that contained a large program on Lingála.”

In today’s competitive, globalized, and spider’s web-like village, it pays to be internationally and culturally competent. It pays to “speak in tongues.” Don’t limit yourself to one language because, “The limits of your language are the limits of your world.” (Ludwig Wittgenstein, Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus)
